Our Mission
Shelter
When women enter our shelter, they are truly in crisis mode. Often, women stay with their abusers because the only other choice is homelessness. Mary & Martha House’s two shelters provide a safe haven for victims to escape abuse and begin recovery. Our shelters are designed to be just like home, with each family having their own space.
Support
Much like the wise Mary from the Bible, we know that it’s not just busy work that achieves results – it is the “good part.” Mary & Martha House provides individualized case management, which is the key to giving clients what they need to succeed. By dedicating time to each individual, fostering relationships, and earning their trust, we heal hearts, nurture minds, and uplift spirits.
Success
At Mary & Martha we take every opportunity to celebrate success – even the smallest ones. Our clients learn how to build their confidence. This sense of achievement gives them the determination they need to keep working so they can achieve ultimate success: acquiring job skills, finding employment, and moving on to permanent housing.
About Mary & Martha House
Mary & Martha House is a private non-profit, tax exempt corporation primarily dependent on private contributions. The Board of Directors is comprised of residents of Hillsborough County, who donate their time, provide direction, oversee the budget and ensure the needs of the clients are met.
Founded in 1982, Mary & Martha House has been helping women and families escape domestic violence & homelessness for 40 years.
Mary & Martha House provides individualized case management for each woman to identify personal barriers and overcome them. Mary & Martha House is not a one-size-fits all or group program. Each client receives individual counseling services to help her conquer her unique struggles.
Our Story
Mary & Martha House derives its name from a story about two sisters in the Bible. Mary and Martha teach us the value of avoiding distractions and focusing on the personal connections that give life meaning – what Jesus called Mary’s “good part” (Luke 10:39-42).
It’s easy in life to get caught up with distractions. But we should not let those distractions take our focus away from what really matters– the personal relationships that give life meaning.
